Gensler : Panduit

How cool is this?  Great recent project by Gensler Chicago.

One of the designers brought their iPad out to the shoot.  I was doomed from the moment I saw it.  Really, though, it’s a very useful device.  See… I can put my portfolio on it.  And Patsy is recording our shot notes on it.  Useful.  Very, very useful…  Ok, fine, I’m a gadget junky.

The Return to GRAM

A sampling of imagery from our shoot at the Grand Rapids Art Museum for Cumberland Furniture.  Most of these include pieces we shot in studio earlier this year.  The museum, a wHY Architecture design, provided a beautiful backdrop for our shoot.  Having photographed the building itself a couple years ago, it was really a pleasure to revisit the space compositionally.

The project gave me a chance to catch up with one of my favorite creatives, Michael Barile and I snuck up on our Art Director to grab a snippet of video with the 5d2.

Much, much more to come on various projects and our seminar at ProGear once things slow down a little.

Most Recently

Things have been crazy busy lately.  We just finished up a few great projects for Gensler, are in Michigan on a couple furniture shoots and next week are heading down to southern Illinois for some more Architecture.

After wrapping one of our sets today, I caught sight of this view out of our location the Grand Rapids Art Museum and grabbed a quick snap with the DSLR.

Lights And Form

I haven’t seen a ceiling this cool since Herman Miller unleashed Ron Krueck on their Chicago showroom.  This bit of overhead sculpture was born on the drawing boards of Gensler’s Chicago office and undulates in soothing gradation as it expands above you.  The ripples become gentler towards the edges  like waves subsiding and yielding to the calm.  We’re about to begin day two of the shoot.  As usual, finished photos to follow later on…

Heads Up

Arriving early to my scout, I spent the extra time outside playing with my new 5d2. Not a D3, but not bad.

Five Days With IA

It was during a layover at DFW (on our way home from Acapulco) that I retrieved a voicemail from IA’s Arturo Febry, telling me that I had won the bid to shoot a sizable project they had spent the last 4 years designing.  We had scouted it a few months earlier, and though the space was just beginning to flesh itself out, I could already tell that it was going to provide us with exceptional opportunities for photography.  I was beginning to wonder if I was actually going to get the shoot when I got that message and as the smile broke across my face, I looked up at our inquisitive server and answered, “Why, yes.  I believe I will have another margarita.”

We spent about 5 days making 28 images (plus some variations).  I wanted to make sure I really got the most out of this. so on the third day I sent my client and assistant home early so that I could study the space alone.  The images I made in those few hours, using only my Nikon and the available light are some of our favorites from the series.

Speak Of The Devil…

On June 7th, beginning at 5:00 pm I will be hosting the first of ProGear’s Creative Seminar Series.  During the evening, I will discuss my approach to architectural photography from both the artistic and technical perspectives.  There will be representatives on hand from Arca Swiss, Phase One and Profoto to elaborate upon the equipment that I use on a daily basis.

I hope it will prove an informative and entertaining evening for all in attendance.  Registration is free but space is limited.  For more information follow this link.
