24 Hours In Berwyn

As a precursor to exploring architecture in moving pictures, I decided to have a little experiment in time lapse photography. Yesterday I setup my Nikon on the tripod pointing out my front window and programmed it’s interval setting to take an exposure every 8 minutes for the next 24 hours. I then dropped the resulting 180 frames into Premier to create a quick little video. I think this is going to be fun!

Brininstool Kerwin Lynch

A long time and one of my favorite clients Brininstool + Lynch has created a new venture by joining forces with Thomas Kerwin, a former managing partner at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Kerwin will bring a wealth of experience in international architecture to the new firm which will build upon the exceptional foundation of these three’s many past accomplishments. I’d like to congratulate the team on their new venture and look forward to seeing great things from them!

Gary Lee + Rm3d

We recently had the opportunity to shoot another interiors project for Gary Lee Partners and my favorite camera manufacturer, Arca Swiss, was kind enough to lend me their Rm3d and a couple lenses for testing. Like all the Arcas, the R Line is a beautifully crafted and well thought out camera. I’ve been shrugging off these technical cameras for the last few years, staying true to my view camera roots, but I can definitely see this thing finding a home in my kit. It’s quick, deadly accurate, compact and just a joy to make pictures with. Of course it helps if you have a really nice project in front of your lens!

Killer Bags!

Whenever I’m presented the dilemma of acquiring something new and very stylish I turn to the lovely Alejandra Valera, who is typically just the width of a 5-year-old away from me, and ask “Where can I find a cool…?” A few months ago I replaced my 15″ MacBook Pro with the new 17″ model knowing that my old shoulder bag (which was showing its wear ANYWAY) would have to be replaced. So I asked my style consultant, “Where can I get a cool new laptop bag!?” I don’t know where she finds this stuff (her resources are a closely guarded secret) but I soon received an e-mail with a link to KillSpencer.

The KillSpencer line is designed and handcrafted in Los Angeles out of materials that have military origins, from the mil spec hardware to the repurposed ‘fabrics.’ There’s a lot of great stuff in the collection; the business messenger being most suited for my big laptop and the repurposed OD truck tarp being the material that most caught my eye. The tarps that are being remade into these cool bags originally served to cover 7 ton trucks. Needless to say, my bag is well broken in and has a nice patina. Construction and materials are well thought out and nicely designed. Spencer also has a small line of accessories that go nicely with his bags as well as a wall mount bracket to hang them from (one of which is included with each bag).

Customer service was excellent and Spencer was happy to answer questions about his product. Good stuff, Maynard!

Adventures In High Speed Photography

The year has started off with a bang at CB Photo while my poor blog sat here, utterly neglected. After three weeks on the road, I’m now in the midst of retouching some 60 images. I always try to find time to have a little fun though… and speaking of the road, I shot these out the window of my car as we were in transit to and from Fargo, ND where we were shooting interiors for Perkins + Will. Don’t worry, Patsy was driving and we only got pulled over once. While 75 – 80 mph doesn’t pose any problems for the Nikon D3 (even at night) those speeds do tend to aggravate highway patrolmen. Many thanks to the nice Minnesota trooper who let us off with a warning!
